Dog-Friendly Outings: What to Check Before You Go

Dog-Friendly Outings: What to Check Before You Go

A café terrace, a park, a day trip: outings are a great way to spend time with your dog. A few quick checks beforehand help you both enjoy the day.

Check the place first

  • Confirm that dogs are welcome and whether they must stay on a leash.
  • Look for shade, water and space for your dog to move or rest.
  • Check opening hours and any seasonal rules, since policies can change.

Pack the essentials

  • A leash and a well-fitted collar or harness.
  • A collapsible water bowl and fresh water.
  • Waste bags and a small towel.
  • Any medication your dog needs, and your vet's contact details.
  • A blanket or mat, so your dog has a familiar place to settle.

Think about the weather

Hot pavement can burn paws. A simple check is to hold the back of your hand on the surface for a few seconds; if it is uncomfortable for you, it is too hot for your dog. Walk on grass or in shade, and choose cooler times of day. In cold or wet weather, dry your dog afterward.

Never leave a dog alone in a parked car, even for a short time, and even when it does not seem hot.

Be a good guest

  • Keep your dog under control and out of other people's space unless invited.
  • Pick up after your dog, every time.
  • Do not feed your dog from the table unless the venue allows it.

Watch your dog's signals

Heavy panting, lagging behind, seeking shade, or refusing to move can mean your dog is tired, hot or stressed. Take a break, offer water, and head home if needed. Every dog is different, and it is fine to keep outings short.

Enjoy the day

Good preparation means less worry and more time together. Pack light, stay flexible, and have fun.
